Macedonia with “God Exists Her Name Is Petrunija” enters the official competition of Berlin International Film Festival

Macedonian Film Agency and the Production Company Sisters and Brother Mitevski are pleased to announce that Macedonia for the first time in the history of Macedonian cinematography will join the official programme of  Berlin International Film Festival with the film “God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunija” by Teona Strugar Mitevska. This is the first time in 25 years that Macedonia is part of the main competition at one of the top three most prestigious film festivals in the world: in Berlin, Cannes and Venice. This finally marks a victory for the Macedonian film following the huge success of “Before the rain”.

The action of the film takes place in Stip, a small town in Macedonia, where a unique ceremony takes place each year on the 19th of January to celebrate Epiphany. Throughout the country, high priests throw crosses into rivers and lakes for hundreds of men to dive in after it. The one who finds it is blessed for the whole of the cooing year and gains the status of a local hero. Petrunija, the main character, encounters the Epiphany ceremony and decides to jump into the water and succeeds in catching the cross. None of the competitors are pleased with her participation in the ritual, and a general chaos ensues. Petrunija remains in her place, with the cross, and has no intention to quit.

This is indeed a great and glamourous start of the 2019 for the Macedonian cinematography, with a film in official competition at Berlin Film Festival, a Macedonian nominee in the Shooting Stars programme (Blagoj Veselinov) and a Macedonian actress (Sara Klimoska) joining the up-and-coming Berlinale talents.

This just goes to show that when projects are supported on the basis of their quality, importance and originality, it is without a doubt that the creativity and one’s efforts will be recognized and awarded accordingly.
